With hirsute gents still chuckling at the term ‘peak beard’, the popularity of beard grooming products has exploded. The market has become somewhat saturated with both well-known and small independent brands. What are the benefits and which brand should you use?
What is beard oil?
Quite simply, a beard oil is a combination of conditioning oils designed to hydrate the skin and soften beard hair. Us chaps have no issue shampooing and conditioning the hair on our head; our default action isn’t to shave it all off when it becomes dry and itchy. Beard hair should be the same.
Along with conditioning face fur, beard oils have the added bonus of smelling great. The masculine aroma of blended oils can almost take the place of your regular cologne.
How do you use Beard oil?
Simple. A few drops on the palms, rub between your hands and massage onto your beard. Start with the skin directly under the beard and work the oil through the length of your mane. Along with oils, the market is awash with beard combs. If you have one now is the time to use it, if not, a regular comb will do the trick.
How often should you apply the oil? It depends. It could be a couple of times a day or every few days. Basically it’s however often it takes for your beard to feel comfortable, soft and posses that subtly shine. We would recommend applying it in the morning after cleaning your face.
Which Beard oil do I use?
Now that’s a very good question. As we said earlier, there’s tons of choice and a paucity of information. Which way is a bearded man to turn his head? We’ve been sent a selection of beard oils from around the world to test.
DEAR BARBER – 30ml £9.95
VARSITY BEARD – 30ML £16.99
BRIGHTON BEARD COMPANY – 3X 10ml £19.95
IBIZA BLEND BEARD OIL – 30ml £ TBC
BARBERSHOP BEARD OIL – 50ML £17.99
As unhelpful as it may be, both our models and ourselves found the most noticeable difference between the brands to be the scent. Giving a coherent conclusion is challenging as it’s very much a matter of personal preference as to which smells the most pleasant. Luckily most brands do offer smaller 10ml samples so you could try a selection.
One thing that we did all agree upon is that beard oils are well worth the investment. For most of our models it was their first foray into the world of beard nourishment and they certainly won’t be looking back. Each and every one found their beards to be softer, more manageable and look and feel healthier overall.
We’d like to say a huge thankyou to the brands that were kind enough to send samples of their beard oils to be tested.
